Heathrow Airport Complete Guide: Terminals, Immigration & Getting to London

Heathrow Airport (LHR) is one of the world’s busiest international hubs, handling over 80 million passengers a year. With four terminals, sprawling transit zones, and multiple routes into central London, knowing the layout before you land makes an enormous difference. This guide covers what Japanese travelers — and international visitors alike — need to navigate Heathrow confidently.

Terminal Overview

Terminal Key Airlines Notes
T2 (The Queen’s) ANA, Star Alliance carriers ANA operates from T2. Most Star Alliance international flights
T3 Oneworld (excl. BA), Emirates, Virgin Atlantic High volume of long-haul international arrivals
T4 KLM, Malaysia Airlines, etc. Reached by free shuttle pod from T2/T3
T5 British Airways (BA) exclusively JAL codeshare flights operate here. Largest and most complex terminal

Note: JAL passengers typically use T5 (via BA codeshare); ANA uses T2. Terminals are not walkable between all pairs — check before assuming.

Immigration & Border Control

Arrival Process for Japanese Passport Holders

  1. No landing card required (abolished since 2019)
  2. Follow “UK Border” signs after deplaning
  3. Use eGates — Japanese biometric passports are eligible (age 10+)
  4. Scan passport, complete facial recognition — no officer queue needed
  5. Baggage reclaim → Customs (green/red channel)

Common eGate issues: Passport cover blocking the chip (remove it), passport placed face-down instead of face-up, or expired/damaged chip. Border Force officers stand nearby at all times — don’t hesitate to ask for assistance.

If You Need to See an Officer

Prepare brief answers to: purpose of visit (“Tourism”), length of stay, accommodation name and address, and whether you have a return flight. Having your hotel booking confirmation on your phone is sufficient.

Getting to Central London

Option Journey Time Approx. Cost Destination
Heathrow Express ~15 min From £25 (cheaper online) Paddington Station
Elizabeth line (TfL) 45–60 min £10–13 (contactless/Oyster) Paddington + City stops
National Express (coach) 60–90 min From £10 (pre-booked) Victoria Coach Station
Black Cab / Taxi 45–75 min £55–85 (traffic dependent) Door-to-door anywhere

💡 Best Value: Elizabeth line

Use your contactless Visa or Mastercard directly on the yellow card reader — no Oyster card or pre-purchase needed. The Elizabeth line runs frequently and connects to central London stations including Bond Street, Liverpool Street, and Canary Wharf. Heathrow Express is fast but only useful if Paddington is your actual destination.

Connecting Flights & Transit

Inter-terminal Transfers

All inter-terminal transfers at Heathrow are free of charge:

  • T2 ↔ T3: Connected via walkway (5–10 min on foot)
  • T2/T3 → T4: Heathrow Pod (automated transit, ~10 min) or Elizabeth line
  • T2/T3 → T5: Elizabeth line (~10 min)

Minimum Connection Times

  • Same terminal connections: 60 minutes minimum
  • Cross-terminal connections: 90–120 minutes minimum
  • T5 ↔ T2/T3: allow at least 30–40 minutes for transfer alone

Transit Visa Requirements

Japanese passport holders do not require a UK Transit Visa for airside transit (i.e., not clearing UK immigration). If your connection does not require you to leave the secure area, you simply proceed directly to your departure gate.

Airport Facilities

Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi (“Heathrow Free WiFi”) is available across all terminals. No registration required. Speeds are adequate for messaging and maps. For reliability from the moment you land, a UK SIM or eSIM is recommended.

Currency Exchange & ATMs

  • Airport exchange booths have poor rates — avoid unless absolutely necessary
  • Best approach: withdraw GBP from an ATM using a low-fee card. When prompted, always select “charge in local currency” (decline Dynamic Currency Conversion)
  • London is highly contactless-friendly — you rarely need significant cash for sightseeing

Lounges

Priority Pass holders can access select lounges in T2, T3, and T5. Airline lounges (BA, JAL, ANA) are available to eligible premium cabin and frequent flyer members. Check your airline’s app for lounge location post-security.

Shopping & Dining

T5 has the most extensive retail and dining options, including major brands and restaurants. Expect to pay £15–25 for a sit-down meal. Most shops open from 05:30 and close around 22:00.

Common Issues & How to Handle Them

Issue What to Do
eGate won’t open Remove passport cover, try face-up on scanner. Wave to a Border Force officer
Luggage missing Go to Baggage Services counter in arrivals. File a PIR (Property Irregularity Report)
Tight connection Alert airport staff immediately. Rebooking is often possible if you notify early
Wrong terminal Inter-terminal transfers are free. Use Elizabeth line or Heathrow Pod
Approached by unlicensed taxis Decline and use official Black Cab ranks or Uber/Bolt from designated pickup zones
