Sky-High Dining: A British Airways Club Europe Review from London to Lisbon

Leaving the hustle and bustle of Heathrow behind, I stepped out of the British Airways Lounge, feeling refreshed. For a digital marketer like me, this transition time between work and travel is a sacred reset button.

With a spring in my step, I headed towards the gate. The anticipation for my trip to Lisbon, Portugal, was building with every stride. Under the overcast London sky, my ride for the day was waiting on the tarmac.

From Rainy London to the City of Light

Today’s flight is on a British Airways Airbus A321neo. The sight of the aircraft glistening in the rain evoked a unique sense of wanderlust. “Take me to Lisbon safely,” I whispered silently as I climbed the stairs.

Stepping inside, the cabin presented a clean 3-3 configuration. In “Club Europe” (European business class), the seats are essentially the same as economy, but the middle seat is blocked off with a tray table. This simple addition of personal space makes a world of difference in the quality of the journey.

Menu Selection in the Sky

Once settled, I found the menu card already waiting for me. This quiet moment before takeoff is perfect for planning the flight. Naturally, my main interest lay in the British Airways inflight meals.

I scanned the options. The main courses for the day were:
– Grilled Scottish salmon
– Handmade vegetable tart
– British cold plate

“Salmon…” The word triggered a vivid memory of Helsinki. I recalled the exquisite salmon soup at Kappeli. That culinary memory was practically whispering in my ear to choose the fish. Decision made: today, it’s the salmon.

The Exclusive “Speedbird” Brew

With the food decided, it was time to choose a drink. The “THE BAR” menu listed various champagnes and wines, but one item caught my eye immediately.

“BrewDog Speedbird OG Transatlantic IPA.”
This is an exclusive IPA brewed specifically for British Airways by the Scottish craft beer giant, BrewDog. As a traveler who loves local flavors, I couldn’t pass up an airline-exclusive brew.

The can arrived featuring the airline’s livery. Pouring it into the glass, a fresh citrus aroma wafted up. The balance between hoppy bitterness and fruity notes was impeccable. This is what flying is all about.

Serenity and Gastronomy Above the Clouds

A while after takeoff, I looked out the window to find a breathtaking scene.

A fantastic sea of clouds stretching to the horizon beneath a deep navy sky.

We had punched through the thick London clouds to reveal a deep blue sky and a sea of white below. This luxury of disconnecting from digital devices and simply gazing at the horizon is something I cherish deeply.

Eventually, the clouds broke, revealing the coastline below. Perfectly timed with the view, my meal arrived.

Dispelling Myths: The Evolution of British Inflight Food

The old stereotype that “British food is bad” is truly a thing of the past. The grilled salmon served was visually appealing and appetizing.

The knife slid easily into the fish, which was tender and perfectly complemented by the creamy sauce. The sides of potatoes and green beans retained their natural flavors. Finished off with cheese, crackers, and a dessert pot, the meal was a complete and satisfying course. The British Airways inflight meal experience didn’t just meet expectations; it exceeded them.

Arrival in Lisbon

As I finished my coffee, the captain announced our descent. The flight from London to Lisbon is a short 2.5 hours—just enough time to enjoy a good meal and a view.

Practical Tips for Your British Airways Journey

Based on my experience, here are some insights into British Airways inflight meals and services that might be useful for your next trip.

Economy vs. Business Class Meals

While my review focused on Club Europe (Business), passengers in Euro Traveller (Economy) on short hauls typically receive a bottle of water and a snack. However, the Buy-on-Board menu often features high-quality items. For longer flights, complimentary hot meals are standard in Economy.

Special Dietary Requirements

British Airways offers a wide range of special meals (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, etc.) which can be ordered in advance through their website. If you have specific dietary needs, I highly recommend booking these at least 24 hours before your flight.

Is the Food Actually Good?

Ignore the outdated “bad airline food” tropes. As seen with my salmon dish, the quality in premium cabins is restaurant-grade. Even the snacks in economy are curated with British heritage in mind.
