Discovering a Sanctuary of Light in Kiyosumi Shirakawa
Kiyosumi Shirakawa, on the east side of Tokyo, has transformed into a pilgrimage site for specialty coffee lovers since the arrival of Blue Bottle Coffee. However, the reason I’m repeatedly drawn back to this neighborhood is concentrated in one specific place, a short walk from the bustling main streets.
That place is iki Roastery & Eatery. Housed in a former warehouse, it’s a space that transcends the simple label of “cafe,” possessing a unique atmosphere all its own. The typography on the exterior wall quietly but confidently welcomes every visitor.

The Unmatched Openness of a Renovated Warehouse
The moment you step inside, the overwhelming sense of openness is breathtaking. The ceiling is high, seemingly stretching on forever. Exposed wooden beams construct the space with a powerful yet beautiful presence. It’s a striking example of a warehouse cafe in Tokyo, and it never fails to impress.

Soft, natural light pours in from skylights and large windows, lending a warmth to the industrial interior. Visiting on a sunny day is nothing short of blissful. The way the light dances around the room, illuminating smiling faces and the steam rising from coffee cups, is like witnessing a living painting.

A Genuine Coffee Experience that Fills the Senses
As the name “Roastery” suggests, the star of the show here is the in-house roasted coffee. This is what makes iki stand out in the competitive Kiyosumi Shirakawa cafe scene. The rich aroma of roasting beans that fills the air is a feast for any coffee aficionado.
My go-to order is the flat white. This beverage, heavily influenced by Australian and New Zealand cafe culture, achieves a perfect balance between the richness of espresso and the silky sweetness of steamed milk. While many places in Tokyo serve a good flat white, iki’s is truly exceptional. It’s one of the best coffees in Kiyosumi Shirakawa and a must-try for any visitor.
More Than Just Coffee: Captivating Cakes and Deli Delights
The true value of iki Roastery & Eatery Tokyo extends far beyond its coffee. In fact, the stunning array of cakes and deli items in the display case is what captures the hearts of its many loyal customers. The selection, from sweet treats to savory sandwiches, is simply spectacular.
If You Can’t Decide: The Supreme Carrot Cake and Caramel Slice
Among the many sweets, there are two I highly recommend. The first is the carrot cake. The moist, spiced cake and the rich, yet refreshing, cream cheese frosting are a match made in heaven. Nuts and dried fruit add a delightful textural contrast, making every bite a new discovery. If you’re searching for the best carrot cake in Tokyo, this should be on your list.

The second is the caramel slice. Its multiple layers create a rich, bittersweet flavor profile perfect for a mature palate. The pairing with coffee is, of course, sublime. These two treats and a freshly brewed coffee are all you need to create a perfect afternoon.
The Sandwiches: Another Main Attraction
While it might be known for its cakes, the sandwiches at iki are also remarkably high-quality. Generously filled with fresh vegetables and premium ingredients on baguettes or focaccia, they are perfect for lunch. Even if you don’t have a sweet tooth, you’re sure to find something satisfying. Just gazing at the display case is a joyful experience.

The Message Above the Counter: “Be. Here. Now.”
A glance above the counter reveals the message, “Be. Here. Now.” For anyone who grew up with ’90s British rock, these words will surely strike a chord. Yes, it’s the title of the third album by the legendary band Oasis.

Is the owner a fan, or is it a coincidence? I’ve never asked. But spending time in this space, you truly feel present—you are, in fact, being here, now. It’s a place to enjoy a delicious coffee and cake without worrying about the past or future. Perhaps these words are a gentle spell, encouraging you to simply savor the moment.
A Practical Guide to Visiting iki Roastery & Eatery
I want you to have this wonderful experience, too. Here is some helpful information based on my visits.
The Menu and How to Order
The menu is extensive, featuring coffee, sweets, sandwiches, salads, and quiches. Each table has a QR code for a modern ordering experience. You can browse, order, and pay (credit card and PayPay accepted) directly from your smartphone. Of course, you can still order at the counter in the traditional way.
Wait Times and Crowds
This beautiful space is very popular, especially on sunny weekends. To avoid a long wait, I recommend arriving shortly after opening or in the mid-afternoon, after the lunch rush. However, even if there’s a line, the time spent in this atmosphere is well worth the wait. It’s best to visit when you have plenty of time.
How to Get There
The nearest station is Kiyosumi-shirakawa Station on the Toei Oedo and Tokyo Metro Hanzomon Lines. It’s a 5-6 minute walk from Exit A3. The location is slightly hidden, which adds to the charm of discovering it. Use the map below for guidance.
My Review: Value Beyond Price
To be honest, it’s not the cheapest cafe. But that thought vanishes the moment you take your first bite. The expertly brewed coffee, the meticulously crafted food, and this unparalleled space—when you consider the entire experience, it feels like excellent value. This is a place not just to fill your stomach, but to nourish your soul.
Reservations
As far as I know, reservations are not accepted. It’s always best to check their official website for the latest information, but you should expect to be seated on a first-come, first-served basis.
Photo Opportunities
Every corner of the cafe is photogenic. I particularly recommend capturing the ceiling beams and the light streaming through the windows. A top-down shot of your coffee and cake on the table also looks stunning. The minimalist interior really makes the subjects of your photos stand out.
As Seen in TV Drama “9 Border”
Recently, the cafe has gained even more attention as a filming location for the popular Japanese TV drama “9 Border.” This added fame is another facet of its charm, drawing fans of the show to experience the setting firsthand.
My Oasis in the City, A Place I’ll Always Return To
For me, iki Roastery & Eatery is more than just a favorite cafe. It’s a sanctuary. It’s the first place that comes to mind when I need to step away from the daily grind or when I crave something genuinely delicious to lift my spirits.
If you haven’t yet experienced this space, I urge you to make the trip to Kiyosumi Shirakawa. I’m certain it will become an unforgettable place for you, too. Thank you for the wonderful time. I will be back soon.
