Arrival Process for Japanese Passport Holders
- No landing card required (abolished since 2019)
- Follow “UK Border” signs after deplaning
- Use eGates — Japanese biometric passports are eligible (age 10+)
- Scan passport, complete facial recognition — no officer queue needed
- Baggage reclaim → Customs (green/red channel)
Common eGate issues: Passport cover blocking the chip (remove it), passport placed face-down instead of face-up, or expired/damaged chip. Border Force officers stand nearby at all times — don’t hesitate to ask for assistance.
If You Need to See an Officer
Prepare brief answers to: purpose of visit (“Tourism”), length of stay, accommodation name and address, and whether you have a return flight. Having your hotel booking confirmation on your phone is sufficient.

Use your contactless Visa or Mastercard directly on the yellow card reader — no Oyster card or pre-purchase needed. The Elizabeth line runs frequently and connects to central London stations including Bond Street, Liverpool Street, and Canary Wharf. Heathrow Express is fast but only useful if Paddington is your actual destination.

Inter-terminal Transfers
All inter-terminal transfers at Heathrow are free of charge:
- T2 ↔ T3: Connected via walkway (5–10 min on foot)
- T2/T3 → T4: Heathrow Pod (automated transit, ~10 min) or Elizabeth line
- T2/T3 → T5: Elizabeth line (~10 min)
Minimum Connection Times
- Same terminal connections: 60 minutes minimum
- Cross-terminal connections: 90–120 minutes minimum
- T5 ↔ T2/T3: allow at least 30–40 minutes for transfer alone
Transit Visa Requirements
Japanese passport holders do not require a UK Transit Visa for airside transit (i.e., not clearing UK immigration). If your connection does not require you to leave the secure area, you simply proceed directly to your departure gate.

Wi-Fi
Free Wi-Fi (“Heathrow Free WiFi”) is available across all terminals. No registration required. Speeds are adequate for messaging and maps. For reliability from the moment you land, a UK SIM or eSIM is recommended.
Currency Exchange & ATMs
- Airport exchange booths have poor rates — avoid unless absolutely necessary
- Best approach: withdraw GBP from an ATM using a low-fee card. When prompted, always select “charge in local currency” (decline Dynamic Currency Conversion)
